ThinLinc 3.3.0 Release Notes

Introduction

A new ThinLinc release is here, 3.3.0. It includes more than 120 enhancements. The most prominent features are:

  • Support for new platforms and desktop environments, such as Mandriva Enterprise Server and Unity 2D.
  • 64-bit versions of all Linux server components.
  • Better performance on high latency networks.
  • Translations to Dutch, French, Russian, and Turkish.
  • Improved functionality in the web administration interface. Many common administration tasks can now be performed with ease.

Changes in This Release

In the list below, the enhancement number is given in parentheses.

Server

  • ThinLinc works on most modern Linux distributions and Sun Solaris (R). This release has been extensively tested on the following platforms:
    • Red Hat (R) Enterprise Linux 6 (64-bit)
    • Mandriva Enterprise Server 5.2 (64-bit)
    • SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 11 SP1 (R) (64-bit)
    • Ubuntu (R) 11.10 (64-bit)
    • Sun Solaris (R) 10
  • All server components for Linux are now available as 64-bit versions. This means that a 32-bit environment is no longer necessary to run ThinLinc. The 64-bit X server also provides better performance. 32-bit components are still provided, and the installer automatically selects the appropriate packages. (3241)
  • This release contains the latest technology improvements of the TigerVNC project. In particular, the CPU usage has been lowered both on the client and server side. (3985)
  • ThinLinc is now compatible with Unity 2D, as shipped in Ubuntu 11.10. (4002)
  • The new tool "tl-notify" makes it possible to send notifications to all or selected users in a ThinLinc cluster. (3450)
  • The single sign-on tools can now remove the credentials after use. (3979)
  • A stability problem with "VSM agent" has been corrected. The number of open files increased over time. (3980)
  • Reconnecting to disconnected sessions did not work correctly on the Solaris platform. (3943)
  • Ubuntu 11.10 has a bug which makes the desktop environment consume all CPU if the DPMS extension is not available. As a workaround, ThinLinc now provides this extension. (4029)
  • With ThinLinc 3.2.0, usernames containing dots were not allowed. Such usernames are now allowed again. (4045)
  • The X server in 3.2.0 could crash if the client requested a non-standard compression level. This has been corrected. (3953)

General

  • The graphics performance on high latency links has been improved. For example, this provides a smooth typing experience even if there is a network delay between the client and the server. The improvement is especially noticable in networks with large buffers. Technically, the graphics protocol is no longer limited to one screen update per roundtrip. (2566)
  • Four new translations have been added: Dutch, French, Russian, and Turkish, in addition to the previous translations to German, Spanish, Brazilian Portuguese, and Swedish. (4053)
  • This is the last release which supports legacy clients. Future releases will require client version 2.0.0 or newer, and users need to have a shell that can execute "/usr/bin/thinlinc-login". (3969)

Client

  • Translations are now provided for all parts of the Windows client. (1071)
  • The Mac OS X client is now translated. (2177)
  • Running the client in non-fullscreen mode on Mac OS X should now work better. (4063)
  • The 3.2.0 client contained a bug which caused the client to either crash or lose the mouse cursor, after the cursor shape has been changed many times. This problem has been corrected. (3952)
  • When using the Linux 3.2.0 client with certain window managers, it was not possible to move remote windows by pressing the Alt key and a mouse button. This has been corrected. (3974)
  • The user interface language of the Windows client is now determined by the Windows UI language, instead of the selected locale. (4094)
  • The Client Customizer can now run on Windows 7. Note however that it is necessary to use "Run as Administrator". (3742)
  • A problem related to the clipboard with the Linux client has been corrected. The 3.2.0 client did not copy incoming clipboard data to the PRIMARY selection. This has been corrected. (3948)
  • Printing to a local printer with the Windows client should now be faster and more reliable. This is because the embedded PDF engine "SumatraPDF" has been upgraded. (3933,3956)
  • The Linux client has received improvements to integrate better with the GNOME 3 desktop environment. (3798)
  • The client now requires an i686 CPU (Pentium Pro or compatible). (4008)

Smart Card Support

  • The smart card redirection now works with the AET SafeSign Identity Client. (3951,3984)
  • The smart card redirection is now compatible with OpenSC 0.12.0 and newer. (4022)
  • The OS X client now features smart card redirection. Please note that OS X 10.5.6 or newer is required. (3748)

Administration

  • It is now possible to configure several VSM server and agent settings from the web interface. (3958,3959)
  • The status of VSM server and agent can be monitored, and it is possible to stop and start the services. (1620)
  • ThinLinc profiles can now be managed with the web interface. (3960)
  • The web interface now automatically redirects to HTTPS. (3842)
  • A new "System Health" module has been added to the web interface. It can be used to verify the performance of user and group lookups. (3973)

Windows (R) Integration

  • Windows 7 is now a supported RDP server. (3065)
  • In some cases, the RDP client could fail with "Internal license error" when connecting to Windows Server 2008 R2. This problem has been resolved. (3997)
