ThinLinc 1.4.1 Release Notes

Introduction

The ThinLinc team is proud to present ThinLinc version 1.4.1. This version includes many corrections as well as several new features. In total, this release contains more than 160 enhancements.

Changes in this release

Server

  • ThinLinc works on most modern Linux distributions. This release has been extensively tested on the following platforms:
    • Red Hat (R) Enterprise Linux 4
    • SUSE (R) LINUX Enterprise Server 9
    • Debian (R) 3.1
    • Sun Solaris (R) 8
  • The server can be configured not to allow connections from Windows clients without updated antivirus software. (1415)
  • The nearest printer queue now supports non-PostScript (R) printers. (1272)
  • The nearest and thinlocal printer queues handles error conditions much better. (1354)
  • A new utility called tl-session-param can display session parameters. (1442)
  • The client IP address is available as a variable in the session. (1359)
  • The OpenGL support has been enhanced, and now supports a wider range of applications. (1297)
  • A problem with horizontal graphic distortions has been fixed. (1444)
  • The fontpath is now configurable. A fontserver is no longer required. This means that ThinLinc can now run on distributions that doesn't include a fontserver, such as Ubuntu. (1150)
  • ThinLinc now works correctly on Python 2.4 platforms suffering from Python bug 1177468. This means that ThinLinc now works on distributions such as Fedora Core 4 and Suse Linux 9.3. (1305)
  • The ThinLinc Desktop Customizer now supports defining names and descriptions for applications in multiple languages. (974)
  • The ThinLinc Desktop Customizer now supports defining hidden menus, which makes it easier to use file associations in KDE. (1224)
  • The tools tl-umount-all-cifs, tl-umount-all-ncp, and tl-umount-localdrives can now (optionally) unmount all mounts with the type in question, when executed by an administrator. (526)
  • The installation program supports Debian-based distributions better. It is now possible to answer interactive questions from DPKG. (1216)

Client

  • The Windows client can verify the local antivirus software. It can be configured not to allow login if no updated antivirus software is running. The client also reports information about the antivirus software to the server. (1415)
  • The default VNC encoding is now ZRLE. This encoding is faster in most cases and consumes less CPU on the client. (1215)
  • The Windows client now correctly works on systems where the TEMP environment variable contains spaces. (1334)
  • A problem affecting copy-paste of international characters with the Windows client has been corrected. (1389)
  • The fully statically linked client has been removed. (1461)
  • This version of the ThinLinc client is supported on TLCOS versions 1.3.2 and 1.4.0, in addition to TLCOS 1.4.1. (1485)
  • When encryption is turned off, the client can now correctly detect when a firewall is blocking the server connection. (359)
  • Local Drive Redirection now works correctly with applications such as OpenOffice.Org, even when the server is running Linux 2.6. (931)

LiveCD

  • The user interface of the network setup dialog has been greatly enhanced. It is now possible to print a test page as well. (1293)
  • The LiveCD now supports WiFi networks. Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP) is also supported. (1327)
  • It is now possible to use a Webb Browser when connecting to the network. This is useful in case a network authentication is required. (1378)
  • Shutdown is much faster. (996)

TLCOS

  • A default sound volume is now set. (1207)
  • TLCOS now asks for a root password during the installation. (1496)

Novell Integration

  • A new tool, the ThinLinc Novell Configurator, has been added. This tool makes integration of ThinLinc into an eDirectory environment very easy, allowing most configuration to be performed with a single click. (1106)

Windows (R) Integration

  • The support for applications requiring Num Lock syncronization has been enhanced. (400)

SafeLinc

  • If the CIFS server accepts the username and password entered in the ThinLinc client, it is no longer necessary to authenticate a second time before using the safelinc share. (1074)
  • It is possible to configure the client to display the SafeLinc shares directly after login. (848)
  • The client now warns if the SafeLinc ports are in use. This is the case on certain versions of Windows XP. (1294)

Documentation

  • The documentation now includes information on how to authenticate against Windows servers using Samba 3. The instructions for Samba 2.2 has been removed. (1310)
  • Documentation for the LiveCD is now included. (1212)
  • Information about the different types of thin terminals that the ThinLinc client runs on has been moved from the client CD to the User Guide. (1199)
  • The FAQ includes information on how to create a clean KDE desktop. (1332)

Upgrading

If you have installed any 1.4.0 "hotfix" packages, these must be removed prior to running the installation program. On RPM based systems, this can be done with the command:

rpm -e --nodeps rpm -qa | grep thinlinc.*1.4.1pre.*
